Jazz routines may draw from styles such as Broadway, Commercial, Musical Theatre, or traditional jazz. Dancers should demonstrate sharp isolations, controlled turns, leaps, kicks, and expressive movement while maintaining strong musicality and stage presence.

  • Tap focuses on rhythm, clarity of sound, and intricate footwork. Dancers use tap shoes to create audible rhythms by striking the floor, often incorporating syncopation, tempo changes, and musical phrasing. Performances may be accompanied by music or performed a cappella and should showcase precision, timing, and musical interpretation.

  • Classical Ballet is a highly technical form of dance characterised by graceful, controlled movements and refined technique. It emphasises correct body placement, strength, balance, and elegant lines. Classical Ballet includes traditional vocabulary, intricate footwork, and may involve pointe work for eligible dancers. Performances must be executed in ballet shoes or pointe shoes.

  • Neo-Classical ballet blends the strong technical foundation of classical ballet with more contemporary movement and artistic freedom. While maintaining classical technique and vocabulary, this style allows for greater fluidity, musical interpretation, and innovative choreography. Dancers should demonstrate clear ballet technique while exploring modern expression and musicality.

  • Contemporary dance is an expressive and versatile style that draws from ballet, jazz, and modern dance techniques. It emphasises fluidity, emotional storytelling, and freedom of movement. Choreography often incorporates floor work, off-balance movements, contractions, releases, and moments of stillness to create dynamic and expressive performances.

  • Lyrical dance blends elements of ballet and jazz technique to express the emotion and meaning of the music. Movements are typically smooth, flowing, and controlled, with a strong focus on musicality and storytelling. Music generally includes lyrics, and dancers are encouraged to connect deeply with the song to convey emotion through their performance.

  • Hip Hop is a high-energy, street-inspired dance style that originated from urban culture. It includes a range of techniques such as breaking, popping, locking, and freestyle movement. Hip Hop emphasises groove, rhythm, individuality, and personal style, encouraging dancers to bring attitude, creativity, and authenticity to their performance.

  • Acrobatic dance combines classical dance technique with gymnastic elements to create a powerful and athletic performance. Routines must include acrobatic tricks such as balances, limbering, tumbling, and flexibility skills while maintaining strong dance technique and choreography. Strength, control, flexibility, and seamless transitions between tricks and dance elements are essential.

  • Song & Dance combines singing with choreographed dance in a single performance, highlighting a performer’s versatility. This style is often associated with musical theatre and storytelling. Performances may include traditional dance or tap elements while the performer sings live, engaging the audience through both vocal ability and stage presence. There is to be no vocals included in the song, only live vocals from the performer.

  • The Vocal category focuses primarily on singing performance. Styles may include Ballad, Musical Theatre, Pop, Country, Disney, or other vocal genres. While movement and gestures may be included for expression and stage presence, the main focus should remain on vocal performance, interpretation, and connection with the audience.
